Live Magazine South Africa
November 2011 will see the launch of a brand new youth media
force in South Africa. This is your chance to get involved!
ABOUT LIVE
Live magazine is created by young people for young people, working with the
support and guidance of professional mentors. The magazine has been produced
in London, UK for the last ten years, and is now opening an office in Cape Town to
give young people in South Africa the chance to get involved in the new SA
version…
The glossy magazine is read by around 150,000 young people in London, delivering
content in a youth voice – with everything from the design and photography to
illustration and editing done entirely by young people. You are in control!
Live Magazine will repeat this successful formula for South African youth, aiming to
educate, entertain and inspire a new generation with a mixture of cutting-edge
culture, fashion, sport, careers, photography, design, art and humour… all
produced entirely by young people themselves under professional mentorship. We
will base the SA version on the UK model, but create the content aimed at youth
here – including educating readers with hard-hitting social issue, politics, careers,
role models, information and guidance.
But while the aim of the magazine is to help educate, you’ll also have the chance to
enjoy super-exciting experiences... like interviewing celebrities, reviewing music,
films, events, creating fashion shoots and much more.
Live exists to help its readers and contributors to access new opportunities and
take responsibility for their own futures.
Our aim to become the magazine that is the publication for young people in South
Africa… Join us in making it happen!
THE OPPORTUNITY
Weʼre now looking for young people who are interested in journalism, design,
illustration, photography, editing, ad sales, distribution or production for a
two-month hands-on phase of activity creating a brand new magazine.
Live magazine is recruiting a core team of young people to work on its very first
South African edition. Weʼre looking for young people to spend two months at the
Live Magazine office in De Waterkant, Cape Town, working with media mentors to
produce the magazine.
What you can get out of it:
-Learn skills, or build on your existing training, in the full range of media – as well
as crucial employability skills – with a practical, hands-on process
-Work with top class expert mentors from publications including
Cosmopolitan, Dazed and Confused, Colours, Elle and many more in a
professional but supportive environment
-Get your work published and read by thousands of other young people – build
your portfolio of published work
-Use the project as a springboard into employment – get supported by experts
and mentors to develop a great CV, contacts, ideas and guidance
-Use the magazine to express yourself – have your say! Talk to other young
people and show them your creativity. Help us get crucial information and
encourage debate among young people in South Africa.
In London, 1000 young people every year contribute to Live Magazine – now
it’s your chance to be one of them on the very first South African version!
No magazine experience is necessary, but weʼre looking for young people who are
18-25 and fulfil one or all of the following criteria:
• Have shown dedication/ determination/initiative: whether that be at school, for
a project, or for their own progression
• Are currently unemployed, or studying part-time
• The Live project will create an inspiring, empowering environment that gives
participants the chance to gain crucial confidence and employability skills, as
well as first-hand experience of creating a publication that will be read by tens
of thousands of other young people.
The practical activities will include mentoring, tutoring in a wide range of content
creation and creative disciplines. This is no college course: itʼs practical, hands on,
for up to four days a week (flexible around current commitments).
We aim to give every team member a wide view of magazine publishing, with
opportunities to specialise in their preferred area (design, writing, photography etc).
There will be opportunities to continue working on Live Magazine beyond issue one
based on attendance, performance and circumstances.
This is not a paid job, but an internship and opportunity to get hands on
experience in a working environment, and we will provide you with a monthly
travel ticket.
